Seed to Elegance

by Kevin Williams

There are few who would dispute that the Kentia Palm is the world’s favourite palm. It is in every way a lovely plant and one that has been very highly valued over the years. Native to Lord Howe Island, Kentia Palm seed was already being exported by the late 1800s as news of its beauty spread to plant aficionados especially in England The founder of the trade exchanged Kentia Palm seed for Norfolk Island Pine seed in a deal done in 1881, so introducing these two amazing plants to the respective islands in one fell swoop. Thus the elegant Kentia Palm began its connection to Norfolk Island, a place with such a dark and turbulent past and the final home of the descendants of the mutiny of "The Bounty". It is however the beginning of this book’s particular story.

The author, Kevin Williams, had a successful export business for Kentia seed and seedlings for a decade on Norfolk Island and has subsequently established a successful business in Michigan, USA supplying Kentia Palms to the US and Europe. The book is a culmination of his fascination for the plant and he also weaves the story of its history and success. The text is accompanied by delightful historical photographs.

As one would expect, the book contains a detailed examination of the kentia palm industry with chapters on harvesting seeds, planting, picking, exporting and selling and distributing. As well, there is practical information on the care of these handsome plants.
