Move
indoor plants away from heating units and out of
draughts.
Keep
new lawns well-watered. Cool windy days can be
deceptively drying.
Prune
hydrangeas. Prune stems that have flowered only - cut
them back to just above two fat leaf buds.
Take
hardwood cuttings of Buddleia. Select hardwood cuttings
from last season's growth.
Sand
wooden handles of tools and apply linseed oil to prevent
splintering and cracking.
Take
cuttings of banksias.
Mulch
the spinach bed with straw to prevent grit being washed
up into the stems and leaves of spinach.
Rake
mulch away from frost tender plants.
Lift
and divide perennial asters.
Buy
camellias in flower.
Plant
garlic.
Once
the leaves fall from deciduous trees, prune out dead
wood and any branches that are spoiling a tree’s shape.
Collecting
and composting autumn leaves will provide you with
excellent weed-free leaf mould.
Clear
autumn leaves from gutters and drain pipes.
Prepare
sites for planting bare-rooted trees.
Protect
orchid buds from millipede attack.
Prepare
beds for new roses. Bare-rooted roses will be available
in nurseries this month.
Have
tools sharpened.
Improve
the microclimate for indoor plants by increasing the
humidity. Place a bowl of water near heaters to reduce
the dryness caused by artificial heating.
Prune
Kiwi fruit vines immediately after leaf fall.
Divide
herbaceous perennials.
Plant
perennial vegetable plants such as asparagus and
rhubarb.
Purchase
bare-rooted deciduous trees. Check to see that stems and
buds are plump and fresh looking.
Place
indoor pots of flowering cyclamen outdoors each night
before retiring.
Prune
grapevines.
Cut
cannas back to the ground.
Cut
sprigs of daphne to scent the house. This is a good way
to prune the bush.
Fertilise
hellebores.
Don't
assume that because the top of your compost heap is wet
that the entire heap is moist. Turn the heap often with
a fork. Moisture and oxygen are vital for decomposition.
Purchase
lilium bulbs this month and plant them immediately.
Unlike daffodils or tulips, lilium bulbs cannot be
stored dry.
Remove
the last of the summer vegetable plants and add them to
the compost bin.
Squash
aphids on camellia buds and shoots.
Plant
primula, cineraria, pansy, viola and primrose seedlings
for winter colour.
