for Australian gardeners

July

Buy bare-rooted advanced deciduous plants. They are easy to transport and handle, but don’t allow the roots to dry out!
Plant new roses.
Feed Cyclamen with half-strength liquid fertiliser every two weeks or so.
Prune Abutilons by cutting one third of the stems to the ground. Shorten the rest of the stems to remove spindly top growth.
Plant Calla Lily (Zantedeschia) bulbs for Christmas colour.
Lift crowded chives clumps, divide and replant.
Feed emerging spring bulbs and protect them from snails.
Prune roses except for the winter flowerers such as 'Lorraine Lee'. Cut stems just above a healthy outward facing leaf bud. The cut should be angled down and away from the bud.
Divide herbaceous perennials.
Repot container-grown fuchsias.
Remove spent banksia flowers and prune the bushes to shape.
Divide and replant miniature agapanthus.
Dead-head camellias.
Prune Japanese Maples lightly, if necessary, to improve their shape.
Go bush-walking to enjoy the wattles and other winter-flowering native plants.
Plant berry plants.
Choose Camellia japonica plants while they are in flower.
Prune fuchsias back hard.
Protect emerging clivia flowers with snail bait.
Assess drainage problems in the garden and take steps to rectify them.
Scrape mulch away from frost tender plants.
Consider replacing slippery pavers with non-slip rubber pavers.
Pot up Hippeastrum bulbs for summer colour. (Leave one third of the bulb exposed above the soil surface.)
Divide clumps of Fairy Fishing Rod (Dierama pulcherrimum), but do not delay replanting the divisions.
Cut branches of Thryptomene for indoor decoration and thus prune the bush at the same time.
Plant asparagus crowns.
Prune 'Everbearer' and 'Heritage' raspberry canes to ground level. With other varieties, remove only those canes that fruited last season and tie up the others.
Buy a potted Daphne in bloom and enjoy its tangy perfume. Prune by cutting sprigs of blossom for the house.
Tidy up strawberry beds.
Aerate lawns.
Lift and divide Chrysanthemums. Strike cuttings.
Plant Peonies.
Divide Rhubarb plants.
Take hardwood cuttings of deciduous plants.
Prepare a planting scheme for your summer garden display.
